Privacy policy

This page explains what personal information this site collects, why, and what happens to it. If you have any questions, or want your data removed, please get in touch using the contact details at the end.

What we collect

You can watch the stream without an account, and without giving us anything at all.

If you create an account, we store:

  • Your email address — to identify your account, let you reset your password, and (only if you ask) tell you when a stream starts.
  • A chat name — the name shown next to your messages. It doesn't have to be your real name.
  • A password, if you register directly. It is stored only as a cryptographic hash; we cannot see or recover it.
  • Your chat messages, for as long as they are kept (see below).
  • Your alert preference — whether you want the "we're live" email.

If you sign in with Google

We receive your email address and name from Google so we can create your account. We do not receive, and never ask for, your Google password, nor permission to post anything on your behalf. Signing in this way tells Google that you used this site; their own privacy policy covers what they do with that.

Chat messages

Chat is deliberately temporary. Messages are kept during a broadcast and for 30 minutes after it ends, so conversation can finish naturally — then they are permanently deleted. We do not keep an archive of past chat.

Anything you type in chat is visible to every other signed-in viewer. Please don't post anything private. Web addresses and email addresses are automatically masked in messages, but that is a courtesy, not a guarantee — do not rely on it.

Emails we send

We only email you for these reasons:

  • To confirm your email address when you register.
  • To let you reset your password, when you ask.
  • To tell you a stream has started — only if you opted in.

Every alert email contains an unsubscribe link that works immediately, without needing to log in. You can also change the setting at any time on your profile page. We do not sell or share your address with anyone, and we don't send marketing.

Cookies

We use only the cookies needed to make the site work: to keep you signed in, and to protect forms against cross-site request forgery. There is no advertising on this site, and no third-party tracking or profiling.

Audience statistics

We keep simple statistics about how many people watch, so we know whether the broadcasts are worth doing. For each stream we record how many people were watching, how many different visitors there were, how many were signed in, and how many took part in chat.

To count visitors without identifying them, your IP address is put through a one-way cryptographic hash together with a secret value, and only that result is stored. We do not store IP addresses. The stored value can't be turned back into an address, so we can tell two visits apart without knowing who or where you are.

We do this on the basis of our legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used. It involves no advertising, no profiling, no third-party analytics service, and nothing is shared with anyone. If you'd prefer not to be included even in these anonymous counts, contact us using the details below.

Where your data is held, and for how long

Account details are kept in our own database for as long as your account exists. Chat messages are deleted as described above. Emails are delivered through a third-party email provider, which necessarily processes your address in order to deliver the message.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it — including deleting your account entirely. We'll act on any such request as soon as we reasonably can. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
